Overview
Mammography is an low dose x-ray procedure to detect breast cancer. In a population of less than 40 years old females this test is used as a screening procedure for early diagnosis. It is also advised to the women having symptoms such as a lump or pain in breasts and its surrounding areas or unusual nipple discharge.
Monthly self evaluation of breasts is also recommended to women for early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Sonomammography centres are specialised medical clinics that use ultrasound technology to image the breast tissue. This type of imaging is often used to detect tumours or other abnormalities in the breast tissue. Sonomammography can be used to screen for breast cancer, as well as to diagnose and treat other conditions of the breast. The ultrasound waves create a detailed image of the internal structures of the breast, which can be used to evaluate the health of the tissue. Sonomammography is a safe and painless procedure that does not require the use of radiation.

Sonomammography (Ultrasound of Breast) Sonomammography or ultrasound of the breast is a non-invasive procedure performed to check the health of breasts and the blood flow to areas inside it. It is an imaging technique that is used to examine and screen for cancer or/and other breast abnormalities. This test allows quick visualization of the breast tissue. The examination is often done along with mammography (x-ray of breast tissue) to study a mass or lump.
When should you get Sonomammography done?
A breast ultrasound or sonomammography is recommended:
When a breast lump (mass) or a general lumpiness is felt in the breast
To determine if the abnormality detected through mammography or a palpable lump is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid tumour
If breast tissue is too dense to be assessed accurately by mammography
In high risk patients with family history of breast cancer, past history of breast cancer or in females older than 35 years of age as a preventive measure to screen for breast cancer
Additional method to evaluate the breast, when mammography is not so clear
- Quick & non-invasive
- Painless
- Inexpensive
- Doesn’t require any prior preparation
- Useful for evaluating breast masses
Procedure
A lady technician will request the patient to put on a loose gown after removing any clothing and jewelry close to the breast area. A wet wipe is provided to clean the area of any dirt, deodorant residue etc. Then a small self-adhesive metal marker is placed on each nipple to help as a reference point during the imaging. The procedure may involve some amount of squeezing of the breasts. Due to discomfort on account of tender breasts, the doctor may advise scheduling the sonomammography when the lady patient is not menstruating. If tenderness still persists, the doctor may prescribe a pain killer to ease the procedure. Dr. Anuradha’s all-female team shows concern for the female patients’ modesty and tactfully handles any anxiety to ease discomfort during an examination.
